History :

Between 1850 and 1930, a great number of the Barcelonnette inhabitants emigrated to Mexico.

When coming back, wealthy, they wished to build sumptuous Summer residences in their birth-place, so to have a holiday home. About 50 villas “Mexican“ as they are called – whose architecture reminds of the “Côte d’Azur” grand villas of 1900 – decorate, with their lovely parks, the place around the old center.

You will also see the statue of Marechal Berwick (1921) and a war-memorial by the famous sculptor Paul Landowski ( who built the Christ in Rio de Janeiro in 1931 ). There are about 10 very nice sun-dials, typical of the Southern Alps, with their surprising devices, in the ancient center.

Barcelonnette, the Mexican town, is a real change of scene, in the heart of the high and protected mountains,

in the Southern Alps. This small capital in the Ubaye valley, this Southern town is well-known for the exceptional adventure of thousands of highlanders gone to Mexico in search of fortunes in the new World.

Listen to this unique history embodied by the wonderful Mexicans Villas, so elegant, and which are a unique

heritage in France. Next to the “Mercantour National Park” Barcelonnette is a paradise for hiking, cycling,

paragliding, climbing, astronomy and nature observation. In Summer, it becomes a prestigious destination with its “ Festival des Enfants du Jazz “ and its undeniable“ Latino-Mexican Feasts “. Barcelonnette is an exceptional
